Wall collapse kills 1, seriously injures another

by | Nov 13, 2019 | Construction Accidents

One construction worker lost their life and another was seriously injured after a wall collapsed on a Manhattan work site.

According to an ABC 7 report, the two men were doing work on a mixed-use development on the Lower East Side the morning of Oct. 21, 2019. Around 10 a.m., a wall on the site crumbled, with bricks and rubble partially burying the two workers.

First responders freed the trapped individuals, who were then taken to the hospital. One, however, died from his injuries. The other was listed in serious condition shortly after the incident.

Exactly how this wall collapse happened was not immediately clear, as authorities said they were working to determine a cause.

A life-changing morning at work

What happened at this work site is tragic. For the two victims and their loved ones, the repercussions are life-changing. One worker died. His surviving family and loved ones are now without someone near and dear to them, and have lost a source of support and income.

As investigators try to uncover a cause, it’s important to note that property owners and general contractors are supposed to provide construction workers with a safe project site. If a responsible party violated code or ignored requirements, victims and their loved ones may be able to seek financial compensation through a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.

After the wall collapse, the Department of Buildings said, in part: “Every worker who leaves for the job site in the morning deserves to come home safely at night.”

Sadly, at least two more construction workers won’t be able to do that.
