Harlem crane collapses, construction bosses charged with crimes

by | Dec 1, 2018 | Construction Accidents

Workers can die when construction contractors and builders are negligent. Unfortunately, New York City construction workers experience serious, preventable injuries on a regular and increasing basis.

Sometimes managers and owners are held criminally accountable when their workers get hurt and killed on job sites. As reported by Pix 11, two construction supervisors have been charged in connection with a negligent crane accident in Harlem that almost killed two workers.

Two workers hurt, two bosses charged with assault

The Manhattan district attorney’s office announced second-degree assault charges against two supervisors with Western Specialty Contractors, according to the Pix 11 story. The company was hired to work on the facade of the luxury property on East 126th Street where the rented crane fell.

According to the report, the criminal complaint stated that Western Specialty Contractors lacked the required city permit for use of the crane and that the workers were not properly trained in its use. Furthermore, the crane was not tied down as it should have been. When it inevitably fell, one man suffered a brain injury, and another was left with a spinal injury.

It happens all the time

The Harlem crane accident was not an isolated incident. It is unusual, however, for criminal charges to be brought.

Construction injury victims and their families can explore their legal rights even when criminal charges are not brought. In many cases, those who have been affected by negligence are entitled to significant money damages.
