Construction worker falls and dies near Grand Central Terminal

by | May 24, 2019 | Construction Accidents

Sadly, another New York City construction worker has perished on the job. This time, it was a 49-year-old worker who lost his life after plummeting from the fifth floor to the second floor of a midtown building.

The tragic May 18 accident occurred at 333 Madison Avenue, between 43rd and 44th streets, right next to Grand Central Terminal, according to an NBCNewYork.com story citing an NYPD report. The building will house the entrepreneur-focused Grand Central Tech, according to the story.

More money for technology … while workers suffer

Grand Central Tech (GCT) is a midtown technology hub that will rent square footage to Facebook and, most likely, other well-heeled tenants. According to the GCT website, its space will be utilized for the development of startup companies, which will not have to pay rent during their residencies at the hub.

Meanwhile, construction workers in midtown and throughout the city face ongoing safety concerns that can put their lives at risk. According to a recent CBS New York story, Department of Buildings (DOB) deputy commissioner Tim Hogan was quoted as saying that one quarter of approximately 45,000 active construction sites are not in safety compliance. The DOB issued a stop-work order on the Grand Central Tech site after the worker fell on Saturday.
